To me it is worth it. Expect to pay a good 2k extra if you choose carmax or a dealership over a private party sale. Look for a car with one owner who has the title in hand. Can you bring someone who is good with cars? They also have mobile mechanics who can meet you at the sellers house.

I’ve never bought a used car directly from someone, but I’ve sold several cars, and I’ve never had someone want to take a car to a mechanic before the sale was finalized. They did a test drive, but I guess the just trusted my word that the car was in the condition I said it was? You do generally get a better deal when buying directly from an owner, but you also take a risk — for example, can you verify that the car title is in fact clear? (I.e. that no one has a lien on the title)

Check out Autotrader and carfax.com too. You’re probably looking at a 2014 Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Maybe 2012 or so for a Camry or Accord.

It’s going to be tight on that budget for less than 100k miles especially for a Honda or Toyota. Look on Craigslist or Cars.com. Put in your price point and mileage on Cars.com or Carvana and see what hits you get.

I settled w/my car insurance today & they offered me $12,000 in order to purchase another car since mine was recently declared a loss by them.

I was wondering if anyone on here thinks that I can find a reliable, decent vehicle at that price point.

I prefer either a Toyota or a Honda.
It should be 100,000 miles or less and be an automatic transmission.
I want a car (sedan or coupe), no SUVs, Mini-vans or trucks.
No salvage titles or previous accidents either.

I have $12,750 in cash and am looking at either a PP or a dealer purchase.

Is this doable?
