As long as it’s reasonably clean, nothing is hanging off of it, and you don’t drive slowly in the left lane, I’m not giving your car another thought.

Ha we have a HHI of $250 and drive a Nissan. I love it. I hope you at least sprang for the larger engine.

I would personally only judge people who drive things like hummers or a Porsche suv (not a good Porsche but a Porsche suv just seems particularly egregious), a suburban or anything obnoxiously large or flashy. It’s people who drive understated performance cars I like or environmentally friendly cars or drive their cars into the ground because they value other things. I would respect you.

We have similar HHI and I am adamant about my base model minivan because it's cheap, functional and will be trashed by kids. I do not believe in overspending on cars. Period. And I don't give a fig what people think about it. I cannot understand how people throw away money on cars. But to each his/her own. If you're happy with your car, enjoy it.

OP here and yes, that last sentence is another reason I like my car! The son of an acquaintance of mine dented our car ever so slightly when he opened his door, and it was so nice to be able to just shrug it off. I have to be around this woman frequently and I love it that it didn’t make things weird.

High-end Audi driver here: I doubt there is much judgment. A lot of "car people" have fond memories of the peppy little Hondas we used to drive, and I, for one, would view that particular choice as reflecting good judgment about cars from a performance perspective. It's better than seeing yet another Jeep Rubicon in the carpool line. lol Anyone judging you for this is not worth worrying about anyway.

People judge based on what they value. People who are really into cars judge people for their cars. That's what they value so that's where they spend money, so they tend to assume that if your car is not awesome it's because you're too broke to upgrade. You see it on these forums in every way imaginable - people who value private schools assume that you either are poor, or if they know you have money they assume you don't value education if you send your kids to public. People who value a big house assume you're broke if you have a small house, people who value living close to their jobs assume you're broke if you live in the suburbs. Some if it is a failure of imagination, some of it is that they need many people to value what they value to justify where they've sunk their costs.

Around here people probably do wonder, but who cares what they think? I personally find anything other than the ubiquitous giant suvs and German cars refreshing.
