There are film programs both at Newhouse and outside Newhouse in SU. If you are a film major and want practical experience, connections, access to studios and equipment, you want to be in Newhouse. The film program outside Newhouse is more academic.

Emerson in Boston is a sleeper candidate. If interested in writing and/or directing, the school has a legit alum network in NYC and Hollywood (including an LA campus). Norman Lear, Jay Leno and Henry Winkler all went to Emerson. Also a ton of comedians: Bill Burr, Steven Wright, Dennis Leary among many others. Great place for the right kind of kid and right in the middle of Boston.

Ah, for RTF, the top programs are probably NYU and USC, but Georgia and Florida would both be good options. If he happens to be interested in Sports Communication, Clemson could be a great choice. Medill is not such a great match given those interests, so you can ignore that argument above.

Agreed re: Medill, but Northwestern's Comm School also has a great RTVF program.

Newhouse is highly selective “obviously”

I’m the comm prof above, and UNC is an important omission from my short list. Florida and Mizzou are potentially relevant, depending on his interests. Most of these schools have (print) journalism, digital/new media, and public relations, at the very least. Some still have broadcast journalism, and some have advertising. I know it’s hard for a 17 year old to make those distinctions, but it really does make some schools a better or worse fit.

What interests him about the Newhouse School? I'm a Comm prof so know quite a bit about Communication, Mass Communications, and Journalism programs everywhere and am happy to share what I know. Depending on what he's interested in and his grades/stats, he might look at either of the Annenberg Schools (Penn and USC), Grady (UGA), Moody (UT-Austin), or Medill (Northwestern). Below is the link to the list of all the programs accredited by AEJMC, which is the major professional association for journalism and mass comm scholars. NCA and ICA are the other two major professional associations, and they may have similar lists.

Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism is superlative in its field. I didn't go to either Northwestern or Syracuse, but have several friends in my extended circle who are reformed journos/PRs/media wonks who attended either and there's a lot of friendly jibing between the two camps.

My son is very interested in the Newhouse School of Comms at Syracuse. What schools have similar programs that we should also look at?
