Growing up we had this amazing little device that you put like a 2 tablespoon chunk of butter in and it had a curve for the corn. Think like a garlic press but for buttering corn. Amazon sells this which is the same idea. Fox Run Butter Spreader with Built-In Cover, Plastic https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I1Y2PK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_EQ54Y379KTVYWB42ARYD

Growing up, we did in our house. I do not use butter now, but I think I always knew not to roll my corn in butter at others people homes.

No, good corn does not need butter or salt.

DH nevertheless always butters and salts his corn, but he uses a knife to spread the butter

Growing up, we put cuts of butter onto the corn.
Then I got married… husbands family is the roll the corn on the stick of butter family.
Like PP, we have a dedicated corn rolling butter plate during the summer since we eat corn on the cob 2-3 times a week.
And I would not do this in anyone else’s home…

I have but generally do not any more, and get a pat on a fork instead

I have never done that anywhere, and will never do it.

No and no

I haven’t but I could somewhat justify doing this at home with a dedicated stick of butter.

No. I cut a pat of butter, put it on a tablespoon and rub it around the corn. The bowl of the spoon holds the butter and you can get it all over without ruining a whole stick of butter.

We do it at our house. When it’s sweet corn season we have the partially smooshed “corn butter” in the fridge between used. Definitely wouldn’t do it at anyone else’s house unless they explicitly told me to.

At home with family, but not with civilized company.

I would only do this in my home with my kids, not around others. Yes.

I would never do this at someone else's house!

At home, we do it. It destroys a stick of butter and is super messy, but we do it.

Also, does the answer depend on if you are at home or a guest at someone else’s house?
