Why not send him to day camp?

This is just needlessly creating a problem.

Chiming in to say that overnight camps are very very familiar with this and it happens to more kids than you think. If he’s ready and eager to go don’t let him miss out because of fear of an accident. Let the camp know and plan well. The prescription is also a very good idea if the accidents are frequent.

2 of my kids were bedwetters until fairly late. One wore pull ups at camp at 6 & one at 7. No big deal at all. Also nothing additional for counselors to deal with - we just added it in the pre-camp family notes to counselors. Both camps said we’d be surprised how common it actually is.

My 8.5 year old DD was a bedwetter until about age 7.5. There’s no way she would have thrived at a camp at that age (she still seems too young) but I was worried about it for sleepovers. Those ended up being a non-issue because of COVID but when I brought it up with the pediatrician she told me there’s a medication you can take that helps keep you dry. It wouldn’t be for regular use, but for something like a sleepover. I wonder if it works for 5 nights of camp? Have you asked a pediatrician?

Ask him how he feels. Let him know that although there is nothing wrong, he may be the only one wearing diapers. If he is pretty mature for his age and can handle changing and taking care of any accidents, I would send him.

Neither of my LO's were in diapers once they trained in the daytime, but I can tell you a TON of kids at each of the two camps I worked at were still wearing pull ups at night. Most were discreet and would simply change immediately before going to bed, and leave the pull up in the bottom of their sleeping bag the following morning. Some took full ownership, and didn't mind if the entire cabin knew about their pull ups. It all depends on your child.

Just let your camp know well ahead of time, so they can accommodate your DS as needed. But let him go to camp, for goodness sakes, if he genuinely wants to.

OP here. Thanks for the input everyone!

This is actually regarding my nephew, not my own child. We do have full custody of him currently. He'll actually be 8 by the time this camp session is set to begin. It's something he's been asking about for months now, but we were told (incorrectly) that said camp would be canceled for 2021 because of covid concerns. That appears to not be the case.

My DD was a bedwetter until she was 11 and we sent her to overnight camp starting at 9. I packed extra sheets and would have a discreet conversation with her counselor and it was fine. She never said anything about anyone noticing or making fun of her. They did have to wash her linens a couple of times (over the years, not a couple of times per camp) and it was NBD.

My nephew wears 'Goodnites' at night and is about that age. To answer your question OP, no they are not very discrete. You can't really see them when he wears them under pajamas, but they do absolutly make a sort of 'swishing' sound like when he walks. They also do swell up and bulge much like a diaper would by the the time he's up in the morning.

I'd say hold off on camp for right now. Kids can be ruthless.

Can't help with the camp question specifically, but it's tough. I have two boys who night trained at 10 and 8-ish (still waiting on the second).

Consider GoodNites Tru-Fit underwear. Get it on Amazon. Basically looks like real cotton underwear with essentially a maxi-pad inside for the pee. It is what it is, but the "diaper" won't be sticking out.

Also, contact the camp. I suspect you'll find that this is not an uncommon issue.

7 is too young for overnight. You need to night train him. Counselors shouldn't have to deal with that.

Somewhat of an urgent question for anyone that has BDTD...but does anyone know how feasible it is for a 7 yo boy to wear some kind of pull-up, overnight for a few nights while staying at a weeklong summer camp? Are they at all 'discrete' enough for him to wear them (likely under shorts) around a cabin of 5 or so other kids his age? Should we hold off on overnight camp until he's no longer having frequent accidents at night? How would we approach packing them for him?

Greatly appreciate any help in advance!
