I just posted at 7:40 with the link, here's a few links to look at. I personally had a Subaru and paid for the head gasket repair. It was around 2000 or so (off memory) about 15 years ago so the estimates in the Reddit thread seem right to me. It's why I refused to buy another Subaru. That being said, they may have fixed the problems with current models though I would go in with the expectation that you'll be spending about 2500 for a fix within 10k miles of the warranty ending. This might make it worth it to buy the extended warranty.

Nissans are for when you can’t get financing from a better brand. That is the only reason to buy one

I didn’t love either one but we got a Forester. It’s fine. I liked the interior better. Lots of windows.

Never a Nissan. Reliability issues for many years to come until you get rid of it.

Well, Nissan has known CRV transmission failure problems and Subaru has well known head gasket failures. Of those two, I'd go with the Subaru since the head gasket is a couple thousand to fix and the Nissan transmission failure requires a new/rebuilt transmission that will cost more than the residual value of the car at that point. I agree with the pp that said the Subaru will also hold it's value better.

Foresters are a far better vehicle. We were looking for a small SUV and narrowed it to the Toyota, Honda, and Subaru versions. The Nissan was not even close. Go with the Forester. It's a fantastic car

Pretty sure a forester will keep more resale value. Something to definitely consider especially in a time where the market it so crazy. You don’t want to end up upside down once the market goes back to normal.

I prefer the look, handling, and safety rating of the Forester--I wasn't crazy about the Nissan front grill and the front felt a little boat-like to me, tho it is sized similarly to the Forester. We are sizing up from a Hyundai Elantra for more passenger and cargo room, and do street parking. Plenty of Rogues in stock around town, not so much on the Foresters. Any thoughts from someone who has had experience with both?
