You can’t start K early, but what you can do is a private K. And then transfer in at the beginning of 1st grade.

I still wouldn’t recommend this. Socially it can make a big difference. I was put in K at the age of 4 with a late fall birthday that was past the cut off. By the time I was in 5th-6th grade, it was obvious how much younger I was than the rest. I was immature and had trouble fitting in. It became worse as I got older. I was the last one to get my license. Everyone else turned 16 as a sophomore and I wasn’t 16 until I was a junior. I wasn’t even 18 when I graduated high school or when I started college. And didn’t turn 21 until my senior year in college.

I noticed as I grew up that I felt more comfortable and had more friends in the grades below me. I connected better with younger kids because I was younger. So what seemed like a good idea when I was young (K, 1, 2) had some negative social ramifications for me over the years. Something to consider. I believe kids do better if they are the same age or slightly older than their peers.

If starting early is that important, consider moving to nyc. They have a December cut off.

I don’t think they’d make any exceptions or allow early entrance for a December child. If the child had an October birthday right after the cutoff, there are private schools that will allow that kid into the K class, and from there you could likely enroll in 1st grade in public. But even they probably wouldn’t let a December kid in K. Just wait another year like you’re supposed to.

No. They don’t do that. There are no exceptions for anyone who misses the cutoff.

What about your 3 year old makes you think he'll be ready for kindergarten earlier than everyone else? What about your 3 year old tells you he should be the youngest by at least 3 months, and up to more than a year?

Nah. There are no 7 year olds enrolling for kindergarten. Six year olds who are about to turn seven will be placed in first grade. That’s where they belong.

FCPS principal here: Sorry, you can only enroll your child if they will turn five by the Sept 30 cut-off. There are no exceptions.

If you qualify for Head Start (based on income), you child could attend at the nearest school that has Head Start classes.

No school in this area will allow a December birthday to start.

Would like to enroll my child in kindergarten but will not turn 5 until December. Does FCPS allow that? What is required? Child is currently 3 so looking at the 22-23 school year.
