OP..no there is no food there. That has been a house rule forever. Yes there is easily accessable attic for extra room. Really torn between just enjoying the summer with him and being appalled with his living choice.

My expectations would be:

No open food in the bedroom, for pest control reasons

And when you leave in August, I expect that you leave it how you found it

Once they are in college, if they are comfortable living in squalor, that ship has already sailed. People who are comfortable surrounded by chaos honestly don’t see the need to clean it up.

Can any of his dorm belongings be boxed up and put in the basement?

What all these PPs said. He will clean it/pack it up when he goes back to college. Until then, don't sweat the small stuff (and as long as there is no food in there, a messy room is small stuff) and enjoy any time you have together over the next few weeks. He will be headed back before you know it!

If there is food in there, absolutely yes. I also have a 20 year old son home from college. Food in the bedroom is a no-go for me. He tried to tell me he was 20 and how that somehow gave him rights to eat wherever he wanted. I calmly reminded him that whether you’re 20 or 40 or 80, we don’t bring dinner plates into the bedrooms in this house.

Other than that, I’d let the clothes and sport equipment on the floor go.

Rent, or contributing to the household in some kind of regular, measured way. He's an adult with a job. If he wants independence from responsibilities, he pays for it.

DS is home from college with an internship and a job. His room has been a disaster since he got home. He has not put anything away. You can not see the carpet at all. Clothes, dorm paraphernalia, random sports equipment. It is driving me nuts. Half of me says hold your tongue and close the door. The other half wants the room vacuumed and dusted. No requirement that it is a show place just not trashed. He is 20! Thoughts?
