If I owned a biz, I'd probably close too. What impression does non-closure give? Best to just close and celebrate. It's 1 day. And a friday this year. Monday next year.

You wouldn’t be in business long. Glad you chose otherwise.

Ours closed but it is in a government building. It was going to be a half day anyway. It's a little inconvenient but I am glad they closed. They have a lot of AA employees and I am glad they got the day off..

Nowhere has closed in years past. So it already looks bad that you didn’t acknowledge this before. If a business wanted to close for this, they could have decided a while ago. Jumping on the bandwagon with less than 24 hours’ notice isn’t fooling anyone into thinking you care all that much.

No one knew if it was going to go into effect this year or next. Once nothing was signed by the end of last week, it seemed pretty clear they’d sign something symbolic to change the calendar for next fiscal year. It’s hard enough being a working parent this past year with hybrid school and reduced hours at daycares/preschools. This was just salt in the wound to leave us hanging.

DC public schools were closed, so I guess it makes sense. But still, super awful for parents.

Ours announced that they will open at regular time but close early at 3 pm. They will observe the holiday from 2022. I am very thankful as we are not Feds and my workplace is not observing the holiday at such short notice.

Ours just announced closure in an email sent at 8 pm. I get that they normally take federal holidays, but many parents aren’t feds. We’re now left scrambling for care for tomorrow with 12 hours’ notice. It should have been incorporated into the calendar for next year, but this feels like just another way this year has been absolutely crappy for working parents. Sigh.

If it follows OPM guidance then yes that would be expected. If it does not then I would be very interested since contractually all of their holidays need to be listed.
