We wanted a live in too, but there was something about the way the costs were structured that made this a bad idea. We'd thought they'd like living in our inlaw suite (it's 1000 sq ft, outside exit, and very nice), but you don't get a reduced rate because they live with you. We ended up renting out our inlaw suite and using daycare, which was way, way cheaper for us.
We had a bad experience with au-pairs with the covid batch and dropped the program after 5 years.
We have a live-in nanny but our situations are changing with the kids going back into school/summer camp. We haven't even discussed rates and the care.com nannies all want to live out.
