I just went to a young relative’s wedding and I’m really surprised people are still doing so much of what we did 20 years ago. The younger generation was changed so much….it seems like people are very big into “I’m doing it my way” but it’s still mostly all the standard wedding stuff but with some little twist like cookies instead of cake or dog ringbearers or weird instructions on what the guests should wear (festive beach or something inscrutable like that).

and you care why?

and you think you're the first 40 something who has judged a 20 something?

let people be

I had a big wedding, 60-70k, about 25k out of our pockets. My family had had multiple tragedies, we needed a celebration. It was excessive and cost too much and it was one of the best days of my life and I don’t regret it at all. We’re don’t have much time on this rock, never going to regret a happy celebration

Not always. I’ve had friends throw ‘mid-sized’ 40K weddings only to end up in rentals post-marriage. It’s idiocy.

Define "big." I spent an average of maybe $50-$60k on each daughter's wedding. Is that considered big? It seemed like money well spent. They were happy.

I had a small modest wedding. I hope DD goes ALL OUT. With any luck you look back fondly at your wedding forever. And we still do even though it was modest but I hardly fault people wanting a big elaborate event.

My wedding cost 100k. I’m usually very practical and frugal but I just wanted to feel like a princess for a day.

+1 I’m having a large celebration post-Covid wedding. AMA. (But seriously above response is it.)

Why do people buy luxury cars?

Why do people buy expensive jewelry?

Why do people go to fancy restaurants?

Why do people pay for private school?

Etc.

Because they have the money. Some people (or their parents) have more than they know what to do with.
