In Maryland he can avoid excise tax if you do the transfer here first. Check the rules for CO.

I would do it when he gets there. Otherwise you’ll have to put in his name now in MD then when he gets there he’ll have to register it in CO anyway. Seems like double the work..

Check the rules in MD and CO to make sure you can avoid the sales/excise tax on the gift.

My DS (27) is moving to the rockies and I’m giving him my car. I want to transfer title and everything to him so he can be fully responsible for it. Car is currently registered in Maryland. Should I do this before he moves or does it make sense to wait until he’s in Colorado and do it then so he can just register it there. I’d prefer not pay fees twice.
Any advice?
