I went from a 12 to a 2/4, since it was during the pandemic, I was WFH full time and it didn't really matter what I was wearing 90% of the time.

I bought a few pairs of jeans in an 8 along the way, and a few sz M tops. (Initially, I expected to wear a 6 or 8 at my goal weight, but sizing has changed since the last time I was at that weight)

I tossed everything that didn’t fit as a way of burning the bridge. Buying new stuff was always a victory lap. Still feels that way

I will buy a couple of staples when things start to get too big. So when I lost 20 pounds (2 pant sizes for me), I bought a couple of pants, shirts, and dresses. Then when I lost another 20 pounds I bought a couple more.

I didn't buy lasting pieces and bought from Target, Asos, etc.

When I lost the last 20 pounds I re-did my entire wardrobe.

I lost 40 pounds in the last year and want to lose another 20 in the coming year. I have been buying new clothes but all from like target and gap outlet. I want to have some things that fit but I don’t want to have to spend a fortune multiple times.

But I also have spent a decent amount of time just wearing too big stuff and that is depressing

I had to. I went from a size 8 to a size 4 so I definitely had to get new pants & shorts.

Shirts and dresses - some still look okay, just fit a little looser which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I lost a lot of weight in my 20s when both my salary was much lower and my job required a suit five days a week. I couldn't afford five new suits in one go (especially because there were already rumors that a dress code change was imminent), but it was a great feeling to buy one and have the others tailored.

yes, but only essential items, and I didn't spend a fortune on them either.
I rapidly lost weight from 230 to 175 , then back to 200, so ow I have pants in all sizes from 16 to 8. Ouch
It's kind of annoying that I have ton's of clothes in my closet, but I haven't have stable weight in more then 4 years now, diet (yo-yo due to medical issues).

Yes, but minimum and stuff that has a greater fit range like leggings, wrap dresses, elastic waist skirts, button-down shirts that look good oversized as well.

At minimum, get a couple pairs of pants/shorts that fit, don’t fall off etc…even from goodwill or secondhand. Then when you’re at your goal, do a full wardrobe renewal.

Yes.

It doesn’t have to be excessive, but you should always have clothes that fit and look good.

Buy new clothes to look nice regardless of shape, size or weight.
