It is more expensive from a tax standpoint to live in Virginia than DC, so other than have a slightly better chance for your kid to attend UVA/VT, there really isn't any benefit.
Also VA is not a shorter commute from there because you are seconds from 4 major routes downtown and can pick the one running smoothest at the time you leave; and you can walk to three metro stops; kids can walk to schools from nursery to high school, whether private or public, and so on. Houses in this area are hard to come by too because people stay there way past kid years. A similarly nice one up the street went recently for much less and that family got a bargain.
