Online. Use a site that makes them compete for your business. Pit them against each other and buy on the last day of the month.

Because of the shortage, I made sure they had exactly what a wanted on the lot, then asked for the MSRP calculation to check options, scheduled an appointment to drive it. I did that for every car I was considering. Some offered up prices, some gave a ballpark.

I didn't really start negotiating until I was sure I wanted a specific car (what's the point otherwise). Did research on other cars/other dealers before starting it so I had an idea of where I wanted to be.

If you are trading, be sure to get another quote, they will low-ball you otherwise but will match Carmax, Carvana, etc.

I think most people dislike the process and worry that they're being ripped off in one way or another. If you're not buying new, then Carmax, Carvana, and a few others have fixed prices, so no negotiating.

We haven't bought a new car in years as we usually drive them forever. We know what we are interested in, but how do you buy a car now? Do we haggle inside and walk away or get the wow price online? The car buying process really causes me a lot of anxiety as I am not an aggressive type. Thanks for any help.
