Let your Nanny know sooner rather than later.

It not only establishes goodwill on your part but will up her chances of finding a new family to work for when you no longer will need her.

OP here--thanks everyone for the great advice!

Our 3-year old is headed to preschool in September and we told the nanny yesterday. She always knew directionally it will happen, but we shared the exact date yesterday.

It gives her enough time to prepare mentally and she can post an ad and get the word out that she will be available in August. I posted an ad last June listing my earliest availability as August and had several great opportunities. It gave plenty of time to interview and decide which family was the best fit. Not to mention, the comfort of having a great job lined up months in advance.

Some kids move to daycare (the definition of "school" that is 8+ hours at that age) around 2, some move to part-time preschool at 2.5-3.5. She's likely to be blindsided if you hid this, plus there are going to be a ton of nannies flooding the market in the fall. Please, give her a great reference and notice NOW or at least by the end of June, and let her know that you will give a solid retention bonus (around 2 weeks of pay) if she stays until both toddlers are in daycare.

We've been in a nanny share during COVID, and we love her but both kids are turning 2 and heading to preschool this fall. I feel guilty that we know our plans but haven't told her yet--our agreement is 2 weeks notice from either party. We'll definitely give more than that but how much notice is appropriate? Should it come with a bonus/severance? We hope to continue the relationship and work with her if she's available for babysitting or even nannying future kids, plus just want to do the right thing. Thanks for any advice!
