What’s most important is to get the right shrubs and flowers for the soil and light conditions in your yard. Otherwise the possibilities are nearly infinite.

Japanese Maple and variegated dogwood, throw some laurels in there. Irises. There are no exciting gardens in dmv, unless you have a 6’ fence and even then…

Keep in mind the yard may look sad because deer ravage it every night.
To make it look happy, you may need to protect anything you plant, even if you think it is not deer edible. Once we started protecting everything we thought might have been intentionally planted in the yard of the sfh we bought. I love in Moco.

Do a big ash perennial garden! You can mix natives and non! Piet Oudulf and the New Perennial movement-style planting is what I want to do sometime, just an intensive front yard garden.

Another great place to go for a walk to see what grows when is the outdoor Native Plant garden at the US Botanic Garden downtown and the garndens around the sculpture gardens along the Mall.

Thanks. Looking to get color right into the ground so I’ll plant tulip bulbs in the fall.
Azaleas, hydrangea, forsythia (?)
Sedum, lavender...
Would a lilac Bush grow?

Lots of things grow well here. Take a walk around Brookside Gardens. It's a great place to see mature plants of all kinds.

Moving to a house with a very sad yard. I’ve had everything cleared out and have a blank slate.
Moving from a bright tropical garden and I’m looking for ideas for nice color around the perimeter of the backyard. Definitely want some hydrangea...what else grows well in Maryland?
