For us (new immigrants in early 1990s) - 1987 VW Jetta - 2nd hand. It was a death trap and very unreliable car, but we were utterly broke. Stick-shift + I did not know how to drive. My DH gave me lessons on how to drive on frozen parking lots in winter nights after he came home from work. This was in midWest. We knew that if I wanted to do well in this new country, I had to learn to drive. I am a great driver and I learned a lot of hands on basic car maintainence stuff - from changing tires, jumpstarting, checking fluid levels, changing the wipers...
For DD - 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid - Brand New. All kinds of safety bells and whistles that makes it an easy to drive and safe car. She was not really excited because she never had a burning desire in her to actually learn how to drive. "Uber works well enough". Her dad insisted she take this to college because of internship and job. She is a careful and competent driver. She knows to plug that thing every time.

1970's Buick and or Chevy. No air, no radio, bad tires.
DS used Honda Civic passed down from older siblings. That car last six teens and three college students through their first jobs.

My first car was a Geo Prizm, although it was technically a family car until I graduated from college and my parents signed it over to me. I was not allowed to take it with me to college, but our campus was self contained so it wasn’t a huge issue.
I bought myself a Beetle after the Prizm started having issues 4 years later.
We have a 15 year old-we’ll see what happens. I fear her driving! Maybe we’ll buy a used Corolla or something for cheap that she can use to drive to and from dance class? She can walk to and from school

Hand-me-down Mazda GLC from my dad. We haven't bought a car for our teens to drive. We all get on fine sharing two cars.

My kids are 23 and 19. DC1 has driven our 2007 Honda CR-V since he graduated from college. DC2 does not have a car.

Mine was a 1979 Toyota Celica, a hand me down from my parents when I was a senior in college in 1987. I had it for two years and then I passed it on to my brother when he graduated from college, as I was living in DC and parking was a pain.
