PP here. There is a story about a nanny abusing a child ( caused their death) and the background check came back “ clear”. The police said she had a criminal record that never showed up on the background check.

There are also many complaints by parents saying Care.com kept charging them even when they canceled their membership. I would be careful about it.

I will say I have to do a background check on a candidate. Then they will send me an "all clear" background check from care.com and say here I already have one run. Then I will say to move forward working together, part of my job is to run one myself. So I will then run it and have things come up. It's usually fairly minor- several speeding tickets etc, but obviously that can be important to know if they are driving your kids around. I guess just be wary and maybe question what background check services care.com uses and how far back it looks.

Care used Sterling as of 2017, no clue what they use now.

Every time that Sterling has run my check, I've had to dispute and prove that I'm not the person from the other side of the state with the same first and last and different middle initial. She's had a number of car and other citations/arrests, so I have to be upfront and let prospective employers know that a complete check will take 2-3 weeks. However, instead of the "all clear," they get to see the full driving record and the federal, state and county records for everywhere I've lived in the last 15 years.

There are lots of great people on care but the background checks aren't great because they only check a few jurisdictions.

I'm sure they've gotten better since then but this guy posed as Harvey Weinstein, picture and all, and was able to set up a care.com profile:

We found our housekeeper of 12 years on Care.com and we could not imagine our household running without her so one happy customer anyway...

The few times I’ve tried to use it for short notice backup care, they haven’t been able to find anyone available

I had a similar benefit at my old company. If it works the same way Care.com contracts with a local nanny agency. You submit a request and they assign a nanny that meets your schedule. You just get a name and their contact information. These are nannies that have been vetted by the local agency, not Care.com. You call them to confirm details. Overall I found it very reliable. My nanny got into a car accident I was able to put in a request less than 24 hours when I needed someone.

The nannies that came ranged from ok to amazing. Noone was terrible. Most of the time I (or my husband) would WFH until we felt comfortable with the nanny. I remember one nanny was a former daycare director and she would come with a tote of crafts and activities. My daughter loved her. If you like someone you can request them again in the future (that was more hit or miss because back-up nannies often find full-time roles).

We found the world’s greatest nanny on care.com so I’m definitely a fan of the site but immediate care is always tricky. I think you’d do better with an agency.

We get 10 days at reduced price from my employer with care.com. Hoping it can help with sick days but wasn't sure if others have had good experience or found it to be reliable.
