He breathes fine, there is no issue there, he just prefers to not wear a mask. Like I said, he wears one when it is required at school and activities and some of his friends houses. But he prefers not having to wear one. I don't think that is all that unusual for kids or adults.

But does he dislike masks so much he would prefer to do virtual camp rather than go to an in person camp in a mask? That's what the OP was asking.

Most overnight camps are doing away with them. They can keep the kids in cohorts and are largely outdoors.

Any camp with swimming. Honestly anything outdoors is likely to be mask free. Sports camps.

sailing camps do not require masks when kids are on the boat (not sure about off the boat, but they are usually sailing)

NP: my kids wear a mask at school because it is required, but there is absolutely nothing fun about it. Camp is supposed to be fun.

Currently the camp regulations in VA (and MD too, AFAIK) require masks indoors, and outdoors where 6 feet distancing can’t be maintained. This conforms to the existing CDC guidelines for camps.

Until the CDC issues new guidelines and states update theirs to match, I wouldn’t expect responsible camps to announce they won’t require masks this summer. I suspect these updates will happen, but until then, most camps are probably holding to previously announced policies. The camps my kid is enrolled in have only said they’re keeping an eye out for any new guidance.

11:04 poster here. We signed DS up for camps in February. There was no way to know then what things would look like today. We choose camps that had 100% refund policies that made sense to us and who had provided us refunds last summer. People who are waiting until the last minute to pick camps based on mask policies are going to find fewer camps available.

No, they are following the guidelines established by the CDC and State mandates. Those are both shifting. As numbers decrease and vaccinations increase, the need for masks diminishes. I don't know of any camp that will tell a child they cannot attend if they are wearing a mask, which is always an option for parents if the mask mandate for kids outdoors is dropped.

DS will wear a mask if the camp mandates it but will not wear a mask if the camp does not mandate it.
