Tomatoes, jalepenos, cucumbers are what is in our garden. Basically a salsa garden (plus cukes).

Sometimes we switch it up. We've done different peppers and we've done zucchini.

Right. Too hot right now, in general. If you want to try, grow romaine type lettuce and plant with some shade and water a ton. But what will likely happen is that the lettuce or spinach will bolt (start shooting up in order to make seeds) before you get anything to eat. Bolting greens taste yucky and bitter. I’ve never grown Brussels sprouts but I think they take a long time. How about Swiss chard, kale, or collards? None of those love the heat, but they’ll do okay.

Too late for peas, but any kind of beans are fine. Look at the seed pack and look for “days to harvest” and choose one with the shortest time.

It’s late for peas in the DC area. You can plant all kinds of beans now: bush, pole, runner, yard-long and so on.

Do you want to plant seeds or plants from the garden center? If little plants, go see what they have - squash, tomatoes, herbs will all do fine.

If you want to plant from seeds you need to consider that it will be hot, and your time till frost is finite. Cucumbers and bush beans can go in up until mid June and still get a harvest.

Swiss chard is a great bridging crop - it grows okay in the heat. Kale like it a little cooler but give it a whirl if you like to eat it.

In late August you can plant more cool seasons greens and they’ll do well into the fall.

I am new to gardening this year. What can I plant after the lettuce and spinach burnout this summer?
