Do you objectively think he belongs on the A team without question? If so, I'd move him to a new club because he has already been branded as a second tier player. If you also think "it's close" motivate the hell out of him to get him on the A team.

Without question? I don't know, because I don't know the caliber of other kids who tried out from the outside (they did ID sessions separate from current player practices for the most part). But I believe the coaches if they say it was a tough call, and I know my DC was really embracing the additional challenge at the practices they were able to attend.

it sounds like they are stringing him along. If you have anything else in hand, I'd just say that DC is disappointed and had hoped to play A team and that since that won't happen he's decided to move elsewhere. Depending on the size of the club, they may value having him paying club dues enough to move him up

If another club is trying to win you over, let your club know and they might revise you up.

like they ALMOST made the A team but there was someone who outperformed them - is there ever a scenario in which they end up getting onto the A team because another kid turns down their offer?

Yes, we have had this happen, but not because we negotiated something. A kid turned down an offer for a higher team, and the club called us and asked if we would like a spot on a higher team than orignally offered. It was luck.

it depends on the wording of the offer. The offers that we've gotten have always been team specific not just club specific. They could ask, but we would say no

I've done it once, the coach apologized and they revised to offer to A team. They were planning on no movement with kids just playing up to get more experience

I would totally do this. They want money. Tell them your kid really wants this location but has a better offer at another club.

Otherwise I would not bet on getting on later. I would take that better offer and tryout again next year.

I know this is going to sound ridiculous but I'm going to ask anyway. If a kid is right on the bubble - like they ALMOST made the A team but there was someone who outperformed them - is there ever a scenario in which they end up getting onto the A team because another kid turns down their offer? We are prepared to accept the offer but multiple coaches have commented to me how it was SO CLOSE. This is U11 so it's not like we're heading to college recruiting or something Just a parent trying to see if there's any hope for my kid who is majorly bummed about this.
