Audible has a good number of free books for kids if you are a Prime member. DS listen to them when he goes to be and has been loving them.

I listened to the Harry Potter and Dark is Rising series with him. He enjoyed Captain Underpants when he was 6. We had to buy those ones.

Popular freebies have been the Genius Files (series), Dragon Squisher, Potion Masters (series), The Zero Chronicles (series)

You can find lots of classics for free on Audible as well.

Mine have listened to the Ramona series, My Father's Dragon, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Pippi Longstocking, Mercy Watson books, Amelia Bedelia books, and Charlotte's Web. They also really like the Finn Caspian podcast.
