Bangkok. I really was expecting smog and craziness, but I found it to be much more appealing.

I was also going to say Pittsburgh! Wouldn’t mind going back.

Surprised that people had low expectations for South Dakota. I’ve been and am going back this year and looking forward to it!

Loved Pt. Reyes outside of SF, most relaxing gorgeous countryside with amazing cheesemakers, grilled oysters, foodie destinations, quiet and stunning

Itaipu Dam: my expectations were very low. It sounded boring.

Romania: again, my expectations were low.

Ushuaia: people in Argentina can be... blunt. They’re much nicer in Ushuaia(and the place is beautiful as expected).

Slovenia: very nice people(and the place is beautiful as expected).

Salar de Uyuni: surreal

Lencois Maranhenses: surreal

Melbourne Australia. I was really expecting the jewel of my trip to be Sydney (which was pretty great). But I fell in love with Melbourne.

Went there with zero expectations. Was absolutely charmed by the transit trains that go through the tunnels and mountains, walking across all the bridges, taking the funicular railway up to Mount Washington, all the hills and row houses and old mansions. All the office workers dressed in yellow and black eating lunch in that circular plaza downtown. Uniquely hearty food (French fries on a sandwich? yes please!) Also a really superb airport.

NP but Pittsburgh also has a really great children's museum, kids loved going up the Incline, and we enjoyed the Phipps Conservatory (also a great outdoor children's area). And some really good breweries and restaurants.

Badlands National Park, SD. Had no idea what it was. It's magical. I want to go back.
