Seems like a simple cost-benefit analysis would say don’t take it down

We have four kids and they are very strong swimmers. We maintain the fence around the pool. Even smart kids do bonehead things, and between the kids having friends over who may not be super strong swimmers or may not obey all our safety rules, and neighborhood kids who might wander in and decide to take a dip, taking away the fence is a firm no-go.

I would drain the pool and fill it in.

You can take it down now. It’s not needed for your 8 year old and there’s a fence around the yard for e regime else. Put it back temporarily if you have young visitors.

This is OP. To clarify, the entire yard is fenced, which meets the requirement for a locked fence around the pool. The additional mesh safety fence has poles that fit into sockets in the pool deck so it can be reinstalled relatively easily.

I thought it was a law to have a fence around a pool?
Anyway, I would keep it. Not just for your kid but for all kids. What if you have some friends over with younger kids, and need to run into the house for a moment. Having a gate that locks gives a little peace of mind.

We moved into our house when our youngest was 7. There was no fence around the pool and we did not put one in. He is now 10. Is a strong swimmer. Older 2 are in middle school.

The backyard is fenced with self latching gates but the pool is off the patio at the back of the house, accessible through sliders. Pretty much even house in our neighborhood has the same setup. Common where we live now.

Hasn’t been an issue. The kids play in the side yard, which is separate and also separately fenced. They aren’t allowed in the backyard when we are not home, and that is respected. We have no young visitors (if we did, it would be a different story).

When DH and I bought our house it had a mesh safety fence around it, with a top-latch child gate like you find at playgrounds. We have one child, an 8 year old who can open the gate. She is a responsible kid and a good swimmer, but of course anybody can fall in.

Would you take down the safety fence now? And if not now, then when?

Our neighbors do not have safety fences, but they have teens.
