Obviously, I don't go in person very often, but I bought a car out of state and need to get it titled and registered in Virginia. I showed up at the local DMV office this morning, only to be told I needed an appointment. When I go to make one, the earliest date available is July 6. This is true for any office within an hour's drive of where I live.

I guess I should be thankful for this system, at least I know how long I can expect to spend there. The problem is my temporary registration expires in the middle of June. I guess I'll be driving an unregistered car for a few weeks.

OK, gripe over.

You have to check the website daily and at odd times. I bought a car in Maryland and also saw only dates in July. On Wednesday about 7pm, DH said “check right now” and low and behold I got an appointment for this Tuesday for 8am. Also, not sure where you are, but looking right now Purcellville has openings the week of June 14.

OP here, and thanks for this tip. I was checking Sunday evening and found a slot for June 8, about a month earlier than my original appointment.

I’m glad you found something! Had my appointment this morning and I was out of there within 30 minutes. This also included me adding on getting a replacement title for an old car I’m junking and renewing drivers’ license. The guy that helped was so nice. Definitely a change from previous escapades at the DMV.

I hope you are joking! People have been complaining about this for a year.

OP. nice thing is when you get your appointment, you'll be in and out in 30-45 minutes tops. no more just sitting in the waiting room for hours on end.

Pre covid times, it was many weeks' wait for my son to get a road test appointment in Nova. He could get one the same day or next day in Williamsburg. When there is enough gas, maybe it's time for a day trip to a more distant county's DMV.

When I go to DMV in Sterling, I get my ticket, go shop at Costco, come back, and it's ab out a half hour wait after that.

VA DMV sucks in non Covid times.
Some people have recommended using one of the mobile DMV sites:
https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/general/#dmv_2go.asp

Good luck, OP.
