It’s certainly not a SLAC. It’s a small public research university.

Yes, it’s a Public Ivy and the fourth best college for undergraduate teaching n the country. At some point, UVA pulled ahead of it in stats to a certain extent and in further popularity. The constant problem for William and Mary is marketing it to male applicants. I went there undergrad and to UVA for grad school. I wouldn’t trade my experience at William and Mary for anything.

Regional reputation as a decently good school. Most outside of Virginia/mid-Atlantic have not heard of it.

I'm totally with you. Visited both schools and fell in love with W&M. My DC will be applying ED in the fall. Too many Lax jocks and not enough diversity at UVA. They don't even try there! W&M has a great reputation. We are out of state so it may be really hard to get in, but fingers crossed.

It’s not “dropping” in the rankings. Schools bounce around a lot based on USNWR algorithms (which often change). It’s very well known nationally. Virginia residents are lucky to have it as an in-state option.

It doesn’t hold the same prestige as it used to, if you’re looking for that answer.

If it’s a good fit for your kid, then who cares? It’s not about bragging rights.

What are the perceptions of the school outside of Virginia because it seems like the college keeps on dropping in the rankings.
