At first when you said 'can't imagine it is true' was because you figured they would be going over MSRP. You will pay MSRP or over for an ID4 for the foreseeable future. Having spent a good deal of time looking at SUV EVs, I just don't see one single reason to get the ID4 instead of a Y. I think the Y looks like garbage, but the ID4 has less range, is really slow for an EV, slow charging, and has very boring/antiquated styling. If an infrastructure bill gets passed providing incentives for domestic EVs, the long range Y could end up being the same price or slightly cheaper than the ID4
I was actually thinking that it should be less, because I've never paid MSRP for a car. But good to hear your perspective as I didn't know these vehicles were going for that and up.
I never considered Tesla because they're more expensive. Not a fan of the look of the Y, but thanks for suggesting as I didn't even think it was close to the price of the VW. I'm hoping the time it takes to get from 0-60 will be improved with the AWD version, but I guess it might not.

FWIW, a lot of the coverage and commentary I've read on the RWD version has said that because it's so heavy with a low center of gravity spread out all along the base of the car (thanks, battery), and because it's got computerized traction control, the RWD models should be just fine in most weather that you'd think you need AWD for. Rear-wheel EVs drive better than rear-wheel ICE cars, seems to be the consensus. But if you're mostly waiting to see if prices come down, or if you need AWD for more than just local D.C. weather issues, that's probably irrelevant.

We want an EV that’s an SUV, AWD and under 45k. Not many options that fit that criteria.

Not snarking at OP but genuinely curious what the appeal behind it is? It has VW build quality, the limited practicality of an EV, and the performance of a Honda-CRV.

Would not be that surprising given the chip shortage and other supply chain issues on top of overall high levels of demand for cars. Plus, it's entering the electric vehicle segment at a price point with few competitors.

So far it doesn't look like they're being discounted at all anywhere; have seen some reports that dealerships are charging over MSRP for canceled preorders. Hard to say what the market will be like when the AWD model is out.
