One kid started wearing contact lenses in 4th grade (age 10), the other in 5th (age 11). Have your 13 year old learn to put them in and out (your eye doctor will teach them). Go this route, rather than sports glasses.

One more tip, go with dailys, rather than bi-weekly or monthly lenses. At this age, their hygiene is not good enough to go with anything but the dailys.

I took my DD who was 11 YO at the the to her eye doctor for eye glasses as well as sports goggles. He adamantly against wearing goggles for soccer. He said he has seen far too many broken noses and eye sockets due to soccer balls begin kicked to the face. He said unless my DD can’t see that well without goggles, don’t wear it.

I’m not saying you should heed my advice, but please tell your DS to be careful especially if he plays mostly in the defensive back positions.

He does, and this is a legitimate concern. However, his eye doctor made it so that I could see what his distance vision was like (using lenses to blur mine to the same). It is really, really bad.

My daughter plays soccer and started disposable contacts when she was 10. No issues getting them in and she can actually see the ball now! If you're open to this idea, have your son try them for a week or so and see how it goes before investing in a 6 month supply.

Recommend the convertible sports glasses kind where you get wrap temples AND elastic strap. Try both and see what he likes better/what stays on his head. Use anti-fog treatment on the inside of the lens. Contacts if it's possible, later in life. Our DS had to do this and switched to contacts around u15.

RecSpecs brand -- you can probably get them through your doctor but also order them at places like Target.

We used Liberty Sports impact resistant ones. Liberty sports.com

Can he do contacts? My son wore recspecs for years, but transitioned to contacts as soon as he could put them in himself. The recspecs can fog up, even the ones specifically made for soccer lacrosse that are impact resistant in the event they get hit.

First PP here- that's the brand with the convertible strap/temple option. Good stuff.

None of them are going to look too stylish... BUT late 80's early 90's stuff is coming back in style. SO the Gargoyles wrap style sunglasses may come back for adult fashion soon enough. Heck, the mullet is back... LOL
