I have never heard of a student being denied entry into Algebra I if they met the two requirements — advanced pass on SOL and high IAAT (not sure what exact cut-off is now). Math and AAP are tracked separately. My DD had gen ed students in her advanced math classes.

Yes. I have just applied for my 5th Grader. I did so based on a friends experience where the child had been pp in LLIV since 3rd, had done AOPS Algebra, passed advanced on SOL and 99 percentile for IAAT but was denied entry into Algebra 1 in 7th and was not able to do Math 7 Honors. Parents fought it.

My DS was principal placed in 3rd grade into the Level IV class. He remained in the level IV class until 6th grade. He did very well - all 4s in the core classes and advanced pass on all his SOL (except 6th grade since they were not administered last year). My DS, along with 5 or 6, of his classemates applied for AAP for MS. They were all accepted.

I did not have him re-take the CoGat and I did do any outside testing. I only filled out the referral. I did not fill out the questionnaire. I never ordered his file, so I don't know what the GBRS said.

This was years ago but when my oldest was entering 3rd grade she was not admitted to AAP. She was principal placed, however, and did extremely well in the class. Wanting to be sure she could continue both in ES and in MS, I reapplied for 4th grade and she was admitted. She had a friend who was also principal placed whose parents never applied and it was a big hock to be separated from her cohort in MS.

If your middle school is a center school, I would. Schools all do it differently but my understanding is that many have a team scheduling setup and the AAP kids are grouped together. If she's not in AAP, she'll be assigned a different cohort of teachers than her friends. That could still happen but at least there could be a chance for a familiar face in class, instead of absolutely no chance at all.

My child would go to a center school anyway but would be in gen ed even though she’s been in a level IV class for the past few years. This is why I’m debating how much to pursue it.

Did you submit an application for level IV services so that your kid would continue with AAP in middle school? My kid (level 3, advanced math) has been in the local IV classroom since 3rd. She’s now in fifth. She’s done very well. We finally applied but she was denied. Should we continue to pursue this? Or should she just enroll in honors come middle school?
