Have your child who is freaked out hang out with the kid who is fascinated. Hell, you hang out with the kid who is fascinated. They are bugs. They don't sting or bite or do anything other than eat, procreate, and die. There is no good reason to limit time outside.

They really aren't that big of a deal. They'll be more of them and you are much more likely to see/hear them this year. Bit life will go on as normal.

It’s a great curriculum piece for my kindergartner right now. She’s playing with them at recess and used the word exoskeleton to point out their casings to me on the walk home. I thought it was a great idea to use them to learn about insects right now.

Cicadas are the bomb! Kids LOVE THEM! They are harmless little creatures. It’s not like they are bees or mosquitoes.
