Do you have a ballpark figure of what the practice charges for this evaluation?

$4-5k

Sounds untrustworthy. Anyone charging this much and refusing to participate with insurance is a diagnosis factory.

DP. No, that's normal. Stixrud is about the same, fyi

You are on the wrong board!
Go over to the special needs board.

1. The pediatrician knows nothing about autism
2. The school has the lowest paid professionals who are pressured by the administration to find nothing wrong so the school district doesn’t have to shell out money to serve your child.
3 there is no medication for autism and psychiatrists don't diagnose autism
4. Dr black is 100% worth it. He is one of the most highly skilled diagnosticians in the area and his staff has credentials that you won't find elsewhere
5. You get what you pay for with neuropsychologists. We paid 300$ for an evaluation and they completely missed autism because "he wants to make friends" which is ridiculous. Most autistic kids want to make friends.
6. Almost no psychs take insurance

Please go over to the special needs board to avoid further confusion

I wouldn’t go to Black. He’s overbooked and overpriced and you will end up with staff anyway. They are all good but that’s a lot more of money. There are other places just as good. OP, where are you?

I'm not in DC but am in an East Coast urban area (lest you think I live in the last of all the evaluators). We got recs from our kid's ped, were self pay, and got an appointment that was 8 weeks out (could have gone a little earlier but chose April vacation). We didn't bother with the schools because I don't have the energy for that fight and based on previous school testing was pretty sure the answer would be she's fine (even though she is not meeting their academic expectations).

Did you mean psychologist? IME a psychiatrist will go straight to medication and can't diagnose autism.

Yes, sorry. Typo.

Go through your local public school. It won’t cost you a dime. And the evaluator will have lots of experience with kids all over the spectrum. Your average pediatrician doesn’t.

Do you start with your pediatrician? We've contemplated having our daughter evaluated years ago, but held off. Now that she's older, we might want to get this done because she's noticed her interaction with peers is different. She also struggles socially/social cues.
