I always thought a pre-sequel spin off of his Law & Order character would have been great. Sort of a dark Monk. Following him as young street cop dealing with the public and the older dead end cops never making it off the beat, through his marriages, conspiracy theories, having to work under cops he didn't respect, first becoming a detective. (can't imagine any actor could pull a younger him off though)

I do think the character Dutch Wagenbach on The Shield was inspired by the idea of a young Lennie Briscoe

There are a lot of "mid tier" actors who totally rock their characters, naturally have the right persona, execute their witty lines flawlessly, and max out the plot(s), but they are not the level of A-list or necessarily household names (more like "oh that guy from XYZ show, yeah, he's a good actor").

Random fact: On an early episode of Weeds the main lady was supposed to state that she had a slightly sexual crush on Jerry Orbach. But he died before the episode was released, so they dubbed over the original line to state that she instead found Orbach comforting and fatherly.

He's tough Lennie Briscoe, delivering ridiculous one-liners to crooks, and then he turns around with a fake French accent to belt out "Be Our Guest," and still has the time to take his kids on a trip to the Poconos and help a girl who got a botched abortion. He was the best and I wish there were more like him.
