I agree. Many White folks on DCUM won't even consider it. My kid went through the process, applied, and didn't get accepted. I would have been happy for her to go there if that was what she wanted. She didn't and she told them basically that she couldn't handle the pressure of the work in her interview, so it wasn't surprising that they turned her down. I get that maybe it's not the right school for your kid but I don't get ignoring the school completely. I think race plays a big role.Anonymous wrote:My kid graduated from Banneker. My opinion? It's not a top choice here because Banneker is 2% White. Folks aren't willing to have their child be an "only".

Personally I am excited about the new building. The old location was doable from my house but the new one is a bit better. But the old location was not super far from metro and bus either.

Be aware you are not seeing the full picture of demand. If someone really likes Banneker and ranks it 2nd, but matches with their #1 pick (say, McKinley Tech), they don't get waitlisted at Banneker. But they would have been happy to attend.
I am not sure what you consider high test scores but the PARCC scores most recently was 96% On or Above Level in ELA and 83% On or Above Level in Math.
