I agree part of the challenge is that people do not believe they are literally talking about having all kids K-10 do the exact same thing since that sounds so ridiculous.
Another big part of the problem is the fact that that info is not really clearly conveyed in the main VDOE materials. It is clear in one or two of the wonky resource materials and it is VERY clear in some of the webinar links but they are burying in the written info the fact that a major part of this shift is the 100% lock step learning for all K-10 kids.

The problem is, the VA department of education plan sounds so unbelievable and crazy, anyone who talks about the facts as presented in their plan sounds like a wacko.
What the VA department of ed has on their website is so crazy, no one believes it is true until you go and read it. I sure didn't. Then I read it and flipped out. My college kkd just rolled her eyes at me, then went to the VA site just to prove that I was crazy. Then she read it and flipped out too.
It is so important that you not just tell people about it, but get them to actually read what Virginia states it plans to do to dismantal inequities in math achievement in Virginia. They are literally prlposing to drop all math education to the lowest possible level of instruction, with zero differentiation even in high school, no honors, no advanced math, no calculus, no multivariable calculus. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
This affects all students 7th grade and younger.
Parents, please go to the VA department of education website and read their proposal. Then get everyone you know to read the proposal, directly from the source. It is bad. It is dangerous.
Then please vote education, and only education this November.

+1. They want to eliminate tracking. They can only do this by forcing all kids into the lowest track.
Of course, this means that wealthy parents will supplement math and put them in virtual classes that teach the correct level. And the kids whose parents can’t do that get no opportunity to demonstrate STEM strength. It will just increase the inequity. I have a TJ alum. And a base school senior in AB Calc who is a humanities rock star. Am not Asian. And, by 8th grade (7th for my STEM kid), my kids would have been enrolled in a strong virtual math class with in person. My kid did a foreign language online during the summer, and I discovered that there are virtual 3rd party classes that transfer to FCPS. My kids would take those and transfer them to their transcript. I’d be pissed that we were adding this to their schedule. But I’d supplement.
Who are we kidding, I lobby hard for charters that could do better at that point, and send my kids private if they weren’t available. I went to an awful public HS with a GS rating of 2 currently in the rural South, and took AP AB in HS. It’s ridiculous.

I cannot believe that more parents haven't looked into this and gotten outraged.
I think the problem is that what Virginia plans to do to the statewide math curriculum sounds so outrageous and fake that no one who hears it believes it could possibly be true, especially here in northern Virginia where we have had an accelerated STEM based, gifted strong curriculum for years.
Read the plan on the VA department of education site. You will be flabbergasted that this is actually going to happen to math in Virginia.

I will concentrate on : the fact that all three levels of IB MATH in grade 11 and 12 (mandatory for the IB diploma), require precalculus (for the HL course) or algebra 2/trig in grade 10(for the SL courses)!!!
As a reminder VMPI does NOT teach algebra 2 nor trig nor precal . SO no one can access algebra 2 until 11th grade per VMPI.
So I want her to chew on that and explain how can VA IB schools continue offering the IB diploma as NO kids will have the knowledge ready for any IB level math--even the one for lib art majors . And as a reminder the IB program is not US based but rather global -not just through Europe but I believe on all continents-so its not like they will have the world participate in this VMPI -we at least not for the next 10-12 years).

At a time when the entire developed World emphasises the need for differentiation and offering MORE "levelling up" opportunities in Math we wil dismantle it? Based on what solid research? Or are we just to "believe"?

This will never work. If it gets implemented, I give it 2 years before it collapses and by then the kids who are strongest in Math will have left FCPS. Equity? Only the kids who won't be able to afford to go private, will stay in public. Whats equitable about that? Private educational entities will pop up like mushrooms in the empty commercial spaces that abound....

Imagine the poor 10th grade geometry teacher who has to teach everyone from the kid who struggles with basic math to the kid who is ready for calculus, all in one class.

Virginia is trying to slip if through while everyone is focusing on closed schools.

IMPORTANT: If you are NOT for VMPI-basically mandatory from VA DOE starting in 24/25 --everyone is in the same math class until 11th grade, no algebra 2 untill 11th grade, no exceptions--for anyone!
So I have been writing(profusely) to Tina Mazzacone-VA DOE and to my IB school k-12 math coordinator in NOVA regarding this catastrophe. I have a brief meeting with the two of them next week online.
