Have you looked at consumer reports for the MDX? It actually has a projected reliability of 1/5. I would not get an mdx. If you don’t care about the design change for the XC90, get that. It’s soooo much nicer than a highlander.
For the 2022? It’s a full redesign? what could they know about reliability yet? And FWIW There are several on our street in the 3-10 year old range and all the owners love them.

MDX, the largest of the cars you named, and Highlander would give you more space if you need that.

I’m loving my Subaru. But...if you’re comparing it to a Volvo or amount luxury car, of course the luxury car will be more attractive. The Subaru competes against large 3rd row SUV’s...VW Atlas, Palisade, Kia Telluride, Highlander, Pilot.

I got rid of my highlander for an xc90 hybrid and couldn’t be happier. Overall so much nicer.

OP here. It’s technically an inch bigger here and there but I don’t think anything noticeable. I really want to like the Subaru but I don’t know why I don’t like it that much.

Yep these were the two cars we were deciding between as well. It came down to space for us, and the Subaru won easily on that. I found the interior to be really attractive, as well. The MDX is very popular and a great car for the right family.

I was also considering all of these and ended up with the Ascent back in 2019–so comparing older designs on Acura and Toyota.
I still wouldn’t get the new Highlander because the 3rd row is a joke, although the hybrid would be nice as the Ascent goes through gas. Honestly, I still look at the Volvo and wish I was driving that, but the practical side of me is happier with the lower payments and increased reliability. I was considering those cars as well, and I ended up with the Ascent. I very much liked the Volvo, but it’s about $65k, and the Ascent (loaded) was just under $50k - so that’s a big difference. They’re different classes. I strongly considered the MDX, but in the end, the third row wasn’t great and we wanted captains seats, which the MDX was not offering in 2021.

Would you get a Highlander Hybrid that also includes a 360 camera? I would do that. Saves you time on going to the gas station and the camera is really convenient if you are doing a lot of driving for kids or parking in a downtown garage where the spaces are really small.

The discounts available are what put it in my range. A redesigned one would make it too expensive for a few years. Also looking at new 2022 MDX that’s already out (but waiting for the price to come down a little) or alternatively looking at fully loaded Highlander or Ascent.
Family of 4, 2 tweens/teens, limited carpool. Need to fit thought my garage door. Currently coming from an old minivan.
What would you choose among these or other similar options?
