If they are far enough behind in reading to qualify, you will get a letter in the mail asking if you want summer school. If you do, your child will do math and reading during summer school.

Lexia is not an assessment tool. Many students are testing below their actual ability level in Lexia. How did your first grader do in PALS?

Any APS student with an IEP or who is an EL qualifies, plus students who are 1+ years behind in reading and/or math.

What if a kid needs reading help but has strong math skills? Would APS just do reading all day during summer school?

Summer school is all math and reading.

If they’re only struggling in writing they likely wouldn’t be a candidate for summer school at all. It’s quite limited who gets it.

If a child is only behind in one of the core areas, then how do they structure summer school?

For example, if a 3rd grader is only struggling with writing, do they also have to do math and reading in summer school? Or are the classes separated by topic? Age?
