SOL for 5th grade doesn't matter! Kids can opt-out completely if parents choose. 6th grade SOL is a different story if you want your kid in advanced math. SOL is for school/teacher performance; not kids. That's it.

We did. But we have covid concerns and DS is anxious. Not worth it, especially when the admin said it doesn’t count for anything. Our child has done well all year so I don’t need an SOL to tell me where he is at.

I've heard similar. 5th grader taking the 6th grade math SOL will allow placement for Algebra.


Nope. The 6th graders take the 7th grade SOL to allow placement for Algebra.

My son was in 5th last year and bc of covid didn't get to take the SOL. So i'm assuming it really doesn't matter. All 6th grade AAP students take the Iowa test. They don't have to take it but it is offered to everyone during their AAP math time.

Math SOL in 5th is used as a qualifying metric to sit for the IOWA Algebra test. You should check with your AARTs and your school’s testing coordinator (assistant principal) before opting out.

The reason I would not opt out is for practice for next year when they do want to take the SOL for algebra & also the IATT.

OP here - Thanks for the information. DD's guaranteed advanced math next year through AAP. So I'm assuming if she does well on next year's SOL, she can take algebra in 7th.

Is your child guaranteed advanced math? Kids can be added and dropped to advanced math at our school. SOLs are ine of the factors used in determining math placement.

I would opt out
Our experience was that the test that counted was the Iowa Test and 6th gr SOL, I think

And remember you as a parent can override decision
If your child is strong in math but doesn’t score well on tests.
