DH and I (who do not always share the same tastes in TV shows, but sometimes do) both love it.
DH is from Montana- Bozeman, even which is more or less where Yellowstone is set- and his parents still live there. He thinks Yellowstone strikes most of the right notes when it comes to portraying life in Montana. Not the melodrama and violence, obviously. That’s dramatic license for television. But the tensions with the reservation, the tensions between the old-school cowboys and the affluent newcomers are accurate for him. And he recognizes a lot of the character types, too. He also likes the fact that much of the show is obviously filmed in Montana. I know that part of it is filmed in Park City (which is also gorgeous), but I believe the next season has all been filmed in Montana.
I would keep watching, OP. If you find it slow, there is plenty of action in the second season as a PP pointed out. I don’t mind the slower pace, though. I find that the story moves along well each episode, even in those quieter episodes where there is less drama.
