I make a frosting in the KitchenAid mixer by whipping cream then adding cream cheese, vanilla, a pinch of salt, and then add as much sweetener as desired to your taste (maple syrup, honey, agave, powdered sugar, whatever is on hand). If you want it to be pink you can add powdered freeze dried strawberries. Include butter if you want it firmer or it needs to sit out a while.

I replace half of the butter in any buttercream frosting with cream cheese.

I'm making confetti cupcakes with food coloring dyed frosting for Easter, per the request of my first grader.

Any recommendations for a not too sweet frosting that would work? Both times I made buttercream frosting recently, it actually gave me hot flashes and a headache from how sweet it was!

My kids don't need that degree of sugar either with the sprinkles in the batter. Any recommendations for a lighter frosting that will also do well with food coloring?
