My nearly 14 year old also has the scraggly mustache. It's so awful, but he's super proud of it. Letting it go until he wants to shave it.

Be prepared for pushback. My older DS (now 18) refused to shave it for a very long time. He stated, 'my body, my choice' - and I had to agree with him.

For Christmas when he was 16, I got him a bunch of grooming products from Harry's. He liked how it smelled (SO much better than AXE) and improved his hygiene and willingness to shave. Good luck.

I prefer the dry ones -- the hair kind of snags if you try it when wet. Much better than using a regular razor, as he'll just end up cutting himself.

Any particular model?

I use a 310s: https://us.braun.com/en-us/male-grooming/electric-shavers/series-3-310s

It works great, and it's easy to use. No need for anyting fancier. Remind him to take off the foil and blow the hair out of it after each use, and change the foil/cutter once a year (can buy on Amazon).

I bought 13 yo DS his own mach3 razor and some shaving cream. He asked for the cream over a gel. I told him to put a little on his lip and asked if he wanted me to do it or if he wanted to. He spent a long time doing it himself, very carefully. Then I told him to wipe it off with a wet washcloth. DH is often gone with work and we did this. I used a mach3 because DS used that forever and seems to like them. I now use them for my legs and they seem to work fine so it seemed like the natural choice for DS. He didn’t really need to shave but was starting to get a dirt lip and was starting in person school.

Buy him both and let him decide which he likes. He probably doesn't realize that he has it, so point it out.

I got my son one of the cheaper Norelco razors at that age and upgraded to a nice razor at 17 or 18 when he finally needed it more than once a week. I don't think he needed help figuring it out.

“He’ll just end up cutting himself.”

So what? Tiny little razor nicks aren’t fatal. And they’re not common either with all the modern razors and shaving products. Even with new consumers.

That being said, an electric may be more convenient to keep a designated area under control. Braun is a good brand.

Let him shave it with an electric razor if he wants to. If he has hair to shave, then he's not too young. It's an old wives tale that it grows back in thicker, so, ignore that advice.

Welcome to the "OMG My Teen is Too Young to Have a Mustache Club". My otherwise, not overly hairy 13 yr old has a mustache. Its hard to believe. It doesn't help that his hair is dark. I'm so ready to shave it! His dermatologist said not to shave it unless its bothering him because it will very likely grow back in fuller. DH agreed.

Not too young. My half-Hispanic son has been shaving his mustache since 4th grade. I bought an electric shaver on Amazon for him. Maybe it was a Braun.

Dark hair, looks kind of dirty all the time, like a Survivor contestant two weeks in, not sure how else to describe it. Isn't this young for shaving? (We are half-Italian FWIW). If he needs to shave, what do I buy? Definitely want some kind of safety/electric razor...
