I don’t consider a WL a soft rejection. My kid was outright rejected at several schools that sent out a lot of WL.

my DC got waitlisted by a public school he applied for EA. It is OOS state public school. we don't understand why we did not get deferred, but rather, waitlisted.

EA deferral put his application into the RD pool. In the deferral letter, he was asked to submit a LOCI. He did that and got in 4 weeks later.

DC applied EA to his first choice as a legacy full pay (the university does not use ED, which he would have used if it existed). He was deferred and asked to submit a LOCI. He did that, and was admitted 4 weeks later.

The legacy effect was relatively minor (as a demonstration of interest) but the full pay factor also helped, IMHO.

I think it would be a good idea to do your research and come up with a solid list of reaches, matches, likelies. Try to really hone in on a school that your child loves, where their scores are about average according to the data. Then, find out everything you can about this school and applying to this school-- read college confidential, find out if they care about demonstrated interest, etc. Work really hard on the application this summer. Have others read the essays. Talk to anyone who can give you insight about this school and what they are looking for.

Being full pay is a really good thing almost everywhere. If DC can fall in love with a school, and get into the school in the Fall, it saves a lot of stress, heartache and aggravation.

But in the end, we decided it was smarter to go ED with the match/reach DC liked. No FA applied for. And DC was accepted, so all's good.

So you can do early decision and specify you don't need aid and that will help your chances getting in compared to needing aid?

+1. My senior DC ED’ed (1 and 2) with no FA requested/needed. But went for reach schools, rejected at both. I’ve since learned that many athletes/legacies come in through ED, so ED’ing a reach was probably a mistake/waste, especially this year.

Of course, none of DC’s matches was a clear ED-type front-runner, so no regrets here.

At need aware schools it is ALWAYS the best path if you are lucky enough to be qualify as full pay.
