I’m a DCPS teacher and I was not asked to return for term 3 and volunteered to go back for term 4. I registered and waited for two weeks and even emailed my principal. DC Health forwarded me the link for the registration website. I got lucky and scored two appointments at CVS in Maryland because I couldn’t wait for DC. DC invited me to register the day of my first appointment.

Oh come on. I have been a vocal supporter of teachers for the last year, but you really need to take a step back and get some perspective here. Teachers are entitled to take sick leave to get a vaccine just like everyone else. They’ve been eligible to get one for months. This special program with CVS was announced last week. None of us get special emails from our employers or the city notifying us when they’re moving to the next tier. You are being prioritized. Be grateful and schedule an appointment, many of us do not have the luxury to do so yet.

Well as a healthcare worker, I got many emails about when I was eligible (I was not one of the first frontline workers such as ER, respiratory therapists etc., but within a lower tier within my healthcare organization). Though I'm vaccinated, I still see emails about getting vaccinated, there's still a dedicated part of our internal internet site dedicated to getting healthcare workers vaccinated.

So yes, DC could do more to get butts in seats, i.e. DCPS should be mass blasting all their staff TODAY saying, look at CVS, there are spots available. If DCPS isn't doing this, DCPS is even more of a giant failure than I thought, which says a lot.

Nope. I'm a childcare worker in DC and still haven't gotten a notification for an appointment from DC. Luckily I was able to get vaccinated in my county 2 weeks ago.

There are plenty of appts available still for this Saturday, as well as some appts at locations for times when teachers may be free after school (e.g. 4:00)

Ignoring where this thread is headed - I found that CVS releases vaccine appts at 6 a.m. You can also go to Virginia and Maryland if DC is unavailable. CVS does not have a residency requirement.

It was NOT random. DCPS sent out orders to return to IPL to just under 3000 DCPS personnel in January (teachers and support staff). DC made EXACTLY the number of vaccines available as people ordered to return and set up dedicated places for the vaccinations. Just under 70% of the vaccines were claimed. Other DCPS personnel did not then get an opportunity to get vaccinated because they were categorically not returning at that point in time and generally were actively protesting against returning to in person. It made no sense to vaccine a healthy 30 year old teacher when a frail 70 year old man with cancer or heart disease was still waiting for a vaccine. Remember a teacher over 65 or whatever the age cutoff is or that has a health condition that makes them vulnerable has been eligible for a long time. So they limited any additional vaccines to teachers who could provide proof that they were returning in person. Shocker is no additional teachers could do that because they were still refusing and schools were still under the restraints of DC Health that wasn’t going to allow for an expansion in term 4. Once DC Health guidance was updated and more of the most vulnerable of DC were vaccinated, they updated the eligibility to allow for all DCPS teachers regardless of coming back. Now a 30 year old healthy teacher who refuses to leave his/her home for irrational fear of covid and categorically refuses to return to in person learning for the rest of the year can go get vaccinated, while there are still many elderly and/or individuals with comorbidities for covid that are still trying to get a vaccine. Really effing fair. The amount of respect lost for teachers is paramount.

Or they can take sick time like anyone else.

Teachers want to be treated like professionals, but then they complain that they can't do things for themselves like schedule medical appointments. How has everyone else managed?

They haven't been eligible since the beginning -- they aren't health care workers or living in nursing homes -- but they were next in line after that. Way before other essential workers who have been working in person for a lot longer.
