They are expanding Oakton HS to 2625 seats and the enrollment was 2619 in December 2021.

Meanwhile they are also expanding Madison HS to 2500 seats and its enrollment was 2199 in December 2021.

Could they not move more of Oakton ES to Madison if needed? There's not much new housing being built in the Madison district compared to other pyramids.

Apart from the inconvenience of the renovation, not sure why you're complaining when they're doing much more for Oakton and Madison than for Chantilly and McLean.

Supposedly most things will be finished by summer, with punch list items remaining for fall 2022. I think it should be done by January 2023.

Yes, Capacity will be increased. It is unfortunate that upon completion- Oakton HS will STILL be over capacity...

I don’t know about the timeline, but the parts that are finished are all wonderful. My DC was in trailers for a few classes but now is in the building all day. Progress is being made, but I’m sure delays are to be expected as with any construction.

COVID has really messed up the phasing at Oakton, because everyone needs to be spaced out more, they haven't been able to close off areas that should have been under construction already.

OHS parent. Are you sure its behind? I thought completion was always scheduled for 2022.

Yes, they first broke ground in 2018 after lots of prep and are scheduled to finish in the summer of 2022.

I spoke with a facilities guy there, who didn't want to share but finally told me they are 8 months behind. it has nothing to due with supply chain, covid, nothing...just "big construction projects always have delays." It seems that they made the "phases" more fluid due to students being out of the building but that doesn't mean they are ahead, just made more of a mess (in my opinion). Of course they were supposed to be done in 2022, but the weekly updates literally tell us nothing and have never once said they are ahead/on/behind schedule.
My kid is a current 11th grader and will have spent his entire 4 years without ceilings in his school. he doesn't know any different! my second kid was hoping for the "brand new school" look in fall 2022 as a 9th grader but guess will have to wait a bit..

Everything is slow. You might think they could accelerate projects with most kids out of the schools, but that's not how it works. Maybe there are supply chain issues, or maybe there's just no sense of urgency about finishing jobs.

World’s longest renovation! What’s going on and why the delay?

OHS had began construction when DC was a senior there! Now, DC is graduating college...

Some School Board members have claimed the Madison expansion may assist with future Oakton overcrowding, although given the shape of the Oakton boundaries that requires some imagination to envision.

The problem is that zoning doesn’t allow for higher capacity. So there really isn’t anything they are allowed to do to increase capacity over that number for that school even with the addition. This is why they keep talking about the new western high school.

Oakton HS is undergoing renovation. In the CIP it is projected to have design capacity of 2,625 students. In 2020 they had 2,722 students. They haven't had 2,625 students or less since 2017. I am guessing it will be overcrowded by the time we get there. Are their any other plans for capacity issues at Oakton or will they be back to trailers in addition to the newly renovated school. I am assuming the population trend will continue for Oakton HS- unless post covid they anticipate fewer kids there, but my guess is being a few hundred over - they will say- its better than before and not as overcrowded as Chantilly. I just figured with a new design they would at least have enough capacity to start with...for first year.
