Cameron Elementary, under current conditions, is the only place to avoid. I don’t know why it’s a mess, maybe poor admin?

Edison HS is fine. My kids found the diversity valuable. They were tracked though, so honors and IB classes have students who self-selected for achievement. Stay on top of things. There can be gaps in delivery. Turnover in staff (IB coordinator, for example), like all public high schools, means the strengths and weaknesses change.

Bc it’s so much smaller than other high schools, there really is an accessibility in extra curriculars that there isn’t in other places.

Cohort is a real thing, you want enough critical mass of academic kids for a peer group. This is there, or has been, with goal oriented and interesting kids who venture out across the larger world later.

It is possible to get a good education almost anywhere. Auto-pilot by the student often does not work well at Edison.

So, It helps if parents are engaged with their children's school work and make sure their kids do all of the homework. Also, if one can, try to supplement at home. Go to museums, take them to a library regularly to get books to read at hone, have child read to parents, etc.

We are moving in from out of state. I know it has a diverse population and isn't one of the "elite" high schools in FCPS, which is fine with me. I've seen people bash it alot on this forum and in other places, but I've also chatted briefly with a couple of parents who's kids have had a good experience.

I would love to hear some more detailed feedback about specific experiences with the AP or IB programs, and what some of the extracurriculars are like. FWIW - I have 2 kiddo's who may attend. Both are very good students with minor learning differences around processing speed, but have excellent executive functioning and are bright, hardworking students. Neither kid is a true athlete. One is a stem kid, the other is definitely a language arts/humanities lover.. They both enjoy drama, art and science.

TIA!

My SILs kids all went/go to Edison and they've been generally happy. The kids were all in sports or other activities, active in choir for example. There was nothing specific to "Edison" that was a huge problem. It is a very diverse school, as you not (race/ethnicity, as well as SES) but the kids all found their tribe of people on the various teams and so forth. All graduates are off to college and one is still there and a good student.

But we're also Asian. I'm told we are white adjacent and have super privelge with my 75K a year salary.

How did you afford college?

Edison is IB and there are few if any AP courses.

Apart from basketball it’s not a big sports school. Girls basketball is a big deal at Edison.

It’s a medium-sized school for Fairfax, so easier to get into activities than at some of the really big schools like Robinson and West Springfield.

People who would never dare set foot on that part of the county like to lump Edison in with the other eastern county schools, but it really is a fine place. It outperforms its neighboring schools in many ways, and while it has its share of discipline issues to attend to, there are many high achieving students and great teachers there. A student who wants to do well will do well, which is true of all the other schools too.

There is a new principal who is great. The theatre department is great! There are no AP classes. Just IB. My oldest did the full IB Diploma and went to UVA. My next one did some IB classes here or there and just got into Michigan last night! Yay! I have 2 more behind her. One is a freshman at Edison and one is in 7th and will go to Edison. It's a fine school and my kids have done well/will do well.

Trust me, your kids are going to be absolutely fine. If you're looking at good state colleges like VT and UVA just make sure they take as many IB courses as they can as that is the most rigorous option available. Take advantage of the vocational academy courses if your kids aren't on the college track.

People here are incredibly racist and classiest - and they will tell you to move so that you and your kids won't be exposed to Black and Hispanic crowds.

So I want to say that any child may have a good experience here. The teachers are pretty good. From what I have seen this is a bottom tier Fairfax school. But not awful. It’s better than all the Alexandria schools except Hayfield as far as bullying and kids you don’t want your kid hanging around. The teachers have a tough job here and some seemed burnt out, but others are awesome. It’s just the way it is nowadays

I live in the Edison pyramid and moving this spring to get over to the West Springfield pyramid. Schools here are all fine but not great. And as WS is just 15-20 min away, it's worth the move for me to get into better schools. My kid is in elementary tho so I cannot give you direct knowledge of Edison.

Teacher quality varies, as anywhere else, but all faculty are overwhelmed with the student behavior issues and the myriad non-educational issues (e.g., hunger from no food at home) which so many students bring to school.

Not my experience either. Not a bad school. Good band program. And it has an Academy built onto it which students can take advantage of.

This is a ridiculous response, based on what I’ve observed from my 2 kids’ experience. DD (graduated within last few years) was sporty and received the Full IB diploma while DS (still there) is not sporty at all, is big into orchestra and other non-sport extracurriculars a is not pursuing the Full IB but is taking some IB classes. Both had some very excellent teachers and some just fine teachers and no horrible teachers, even with COVID. Based on conversations with other Edison parents, I think our experience is pretty typical, and I haven’t met any parents who wished they would’ve moved so their kids didn’t attend Edison. And my kids did not report disruptive behavior issues at all.
