Yes - if a "good faith effort" is made the lowest score you can earn is 50%.
But if you fail to turn in anything for the assignment you score a 0.

FCPS if you don’t turn it in you get a 0.. some kids are smart they will complete 5 assignments and then quit cause they know they will pass

Only the heartiest of kids are still in it to win it. My oldest is fine, my youngest is at the end of his virtual learning rope.

I know if I had to learn virtually with YouTube at my fingertips, it wouldn’t happen.

It's finny -- there's some mom of a 9th grader at my son's high school who has been very active in promoting a grading change for students like her son, who have had a hard time adapting to distance learning and/or high school itself. She wanted them to switch to Pass/Fail for the quarter. But I don't think she will be happy with this outcome instead. Now she has to make her kid work all spring break to turn in his missing assignments!

But realistically, kids aren't going to do this work. We were just told today it would be a good idea to email parents of kids who were getting below a C to be sure they knew their kids were missing work and could make it up. But I suspect only a few of them care.

Me, I'll accept work up until the very last minute if a kid wants to turn it in, but I am not going to sit there he night before grades are due, answering questions about how to do an assignment. That's not reasonable to expect from a teacher.

Most of my students come to class and do the work that I assign, so they are doing OK.

But I do have about 5-10% of the students each week who just won't do any hard work. If I give them something easy, and sit on them, basically, they will complete the assignment but I have to have them right there in front of me (on Zoom) and not let them log off until I see they have actually turned in the work. Not unlike during in person school, when we have to tell kids they nee to finish their work before they can go to recess. (We aren't officially allowed to do that, but in reality that is how you get some kids to put something down on their paper.) With kids on Zoom, they can just leave when they want so we don't have recess to hold over them... so it is harder and harder to get this small group to turn in their assignments.

But I truly don't expect kids who wouldn't do the work the first time to do it over break! Maybe ONE kid and only if I threten he won't pass to the next grade.

While I'm happy that they are giving this opportunity to the students, this is potentially a HUGE amount of work for the teachers.

This policy applies to classwork, independent work and assessments.

I think in order to make up missed assessments, teachers are going to need to spend the first week back after spring break doing make-up testing.

I'm a teacher and I plan to give my students free choice assignments the first two days back so any student who needs to make up an assessment can do so -- will be giving a lot of spelling tests I expect.

In case you didn't get the memo, PGCPS just announced that all students will have the opportunity over Spring Break to submit any missing assignments before the end of the marking period.

So if your child didn't do any work this past quarter, they can spend this next week finishing all the assignments they haven't touched all quarter!
