U11 and below is fluid where we are, U12 and up is essentially the same team with tryouts to scope very new talent that could aid the current team. The tryout is the year you just played and based on that, the coach will know if you're good enough to keep or take a chance on a new player they saw for a whopping 2 or so hours. I think "tryouts" are required, but a coach isn't going to look for massive turnover as that is extremely disruptive.

McLean always adds players. They had a U10 girls team with 15 players back when you could only roster 12 for a game and the team was playing 7 vs 7. Each week 3 players had to guest with other teams and you would not find out until Thursday or Friday. Good times

The club definitely matters. Is it a club that utilizes a player pool system or are they unique teams within the club (like BRYC non-academy travel teams) etc.?

I'm the one that mentioned ADP. My child's club is not Arlington and they have ADP. I also said "ADP or similar pretravel U8".

What is adp?

Complete teams do not get formed every year. Coaches already know based on previous year performance who are the kids they want for sure. If you have a bunch who are just ok, then the coach will have an eye for better players for the next season.

Coaches are always looking to make their teams stronger so no, not everyone gets a pass but if you have a solid team then they do have only a few spots available.

There are really no cuts ever. Sometimes an A team player may get demoted to the B team and then decide to leave rather than take the demotion. but I've never seen cuts at any age. Its all about the money my brotha.

Your son would finish out the soccer year on his current team. They would then offer him a spot on a lower team. They will always find a spot for a paying customer, just might be on a lower team.

If enough better kids show up than the current batch of known, it could be all new.

U9 is usually the first "travel" year. So U9 is slightly different in that a new team is formed (although club with ADP or similar pretravel U8 is similar to U10 and above). For U10 and above, the kids already on the team they know pretty well. Most will be on the team the next year, but some will drop down to a lower team, depending on the quality of new kids trying out.
