Most Lukes are short for Lucas, no?

No, it's often used on its own as a given name.

No, I would not assume that someone named Luke was Christian. Yes, Luke was one of the four Evangelists. But a lot of saint's names have just become...names.

If you wanted to get a little more distance, you could go with Lucas, the original Latin name.

I never once heard the name Lucas or Luke and thought "there goes a Christian lad!" Patrick, Christopher, etc., sure. Not Luke.

I mean, Luke is one of the four evangelists, so it definitely has a Christian connotation. Lucas, less so. That said, Luke is such a common name that when I hear it I don't jump to "they must be really Christian" or anything.

If you have other kids named Matthew, Mark, and John and aren't Christian, that's where it would get weird.

Since Luke is a book of the Gospel, yes.

But it is a name with really broad appeal and many cultural variations. It's hard to pin down, and I mean that as a compliment.

No I wouldn't think twice about an Indian Luke or a Jewish Luke. I think most saint's names by now are so integrated into English speaking naming conventions that they don't say whether someone is Christian or not. They're just English names.
