Natives never worked for him, but our number one shoe now is crocs - just the regular standard ones. They are wide, he could get them on himself at a pretty young age, work for outdoor play, water play, add socks (I know really cool! haha) and they work well into fall until winter really sets in. They are just so versatile. Light, easy for him to climb things etc. and when they get dirty you can just hose them off.
+1 He's not going to win any fashion contests, but my wide-footed DS loves his crocs! I'm surprised how sturdy they are, he can run around and play for hours in them and they are so easy to get clean if they get gross. For more sneaker-type shoes I just discovered Bogs, which is mostly rain/snow boots but they have a few styles of velcro sneakers that have worked well for DS.
