Arrow root, mostly. Sometimes they thrive for a long time in water and then suddenly die.

NP I start mine in water to root but then transfer to soil after a coupe if weeks. Are you saying then can stay in water indefinitely?

They will survive, but the roots will quickly get long, pretty icky after a while.

I have a very similar one (though not purple on the underside) - I've kept it in water and it's been fine. The plant I have is very fragile though, so if I touch the leaves the wrong way, they fall off. But I have one in soil too and it acts the same way, so it's not because it's in water.

Agree on this one. I took some cuttings from my office plants when I left to telework a year ago, and they've been thriving in a vase of water ever since.
